Chapter Twelve

“I wouldn’t ask you to be there, but with Oleander gone, we have no choice,” Ivy said imploringly. “The demons have brought in new recruits, dark breeds to prevent the Union from victory. Once the Union loses, the demon will take Virginia.”

Victoria made a face. “I can’t go,” she insisted.

“When you accepted my rose, you signed on for whatever duties a warrior woodland is charged to undertake.”

“But I’m not immortal,” she exclaimed. “I could die there by a demon’s hands.”

Ivy shook her head. “I told you I couldn’t give you immortality, only the power and the chance to make a difference.”

Her tone was cool and her stare determined.

“We only recruited humans because of the last defeats the demons dealt us. The aurai’s numbers are dwindling as they wait for their next generation to come of age, but they won’t unless we prevent the Confederate’s victory here.”

Victoria paced away from the golden-skinned woman whose hair bore bronze highlights in the sun coming in from the wide window. This parlor was hers to use, her mother not caring for it much.

Even as she spoke, her mother was in New York having fled when the war began. She’d stayed as was part of her duty as a member of the woodland warriors.

“I promised her I wouldn’t be there,” she said.

“Who?”

“Euri.” Her love, the beat of her heart. The woman who’d captured her soul so irrevocably with a single look across the crowded ballroom four years ago. She’d been lucky to have her parents take her along, but they’d both insisted the culture and change of scene would do her good.

“I know you love this woman, Victoria, but love is secondary to everything at this time. She knows it must be sacrificed to victory,” Ivy told her. “Her mother sent her there because, if the Confederacy wins, good magick will never flourish in this country. The evil they’re willing to stoop to is evident in what they did in Salem.”

“Salem,” she murmured as she briefly recalled the dreams of being burned at the stake she’d had all her life. The wind had howled that day and it had started to snow for just a second.

“She’ll understand,” Ivy said. Elaina will go with you. You two will be fighting in Euri’s unit.”

“Okay.” She didn’t want to go, but she had agreed to be a warrior, all to be with her beloved. If she died there on the field of battle, at least her love would be near.

She drew in a slow breath, shaking, but Victoria accepted here and now that this battle might be the last time she saw Euri. However, her heart would always be wherever Euri was.

Michaela woke to her alarm clock’s impatient announcement of the time and rolled over, slapping it off with a groan. She laid there for ten minutes.

The dream lingered in thoughts, especially the fear of Euri’s reaction to Victoria’s going to Virginia. She still felt the intensity of Victoria’s love, her desire not to die. And she felt her anger.
